Greyfriar's Bobby In 1858, a policeman named John Gray was buried in Old Greyfriars Churchyard in Edinburgh. He left behind his faithful dog, Bobby. This little Skye Terrier was so devoted that for the remainder of his 14 years he would sit at his master's grave, only leaving to get fed. When someone said that, by law, a stray dog had to be put down, the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals paid for Bobby's licence fee. He then became the responsibility of the city council. Bobby passed away in 1872 but could not be burried within the cemetry itself. Instead he was burried just inside the gate of Greyfair's Kirkyard, not far from John Grey's grave. His headstone states, "Greyfrair's Bobby - died 14th January 1872-aged 16 years. Let his loyalty and devotion be a lesson to us all" | ![]() |
Eddie You may not have heard of Moose or Enzo, but these are 2 of the most famous dogs on television. Perhaps you will be more familiar with their stage name - Eddie from the comedy Frazier. Eddie, of course is the lovable, if somwhat troublesome Jack Russell that quite frequently steals the show from its human co-stars. Moose played the original Eddie from 1993 to 2003. Apparently he was just as mischievous at home as he was in the show. He was forever digging holes in the lawn and was even known to climb trees on occasion. When Moose retired, his son, Enzo, followed in his father's pawprints and took over the role. So, in actual fact, one of the most endearing little animals was really 2 dogs. It just goes to show that showbiz runs in the family. |
